Quick Review : Kanne Kalaimaane

by Rinku Gupta
Kanne Kalaimaane is Seenu Ramasamy's next film, starring Udhayanidhi and Tamannaah and produced by Red Giant Movies. In this rural subject, Udhayanidhi plays a farmer called Kannan who runs an organic farming enterprise and helps  people in the village.

His habit of borrowing loans for poor villagers from the village bank lands him under the lens of the new upright, honest bank manager Bharathi ( Tamannaah). After some initial friction they both are drawn to each other's qualities and decide to get married  How do Kannan's grandmother  ( vadivakkarasi) and father  (poo Ram) both of  whom he worships, react to having a working daughter-in-law  from another community? How do the couple overcome hurdles in thier life forms the story which has an unexpected twist hidden away as well.

This is easily Tamannaah's career best performance. Restrained and nuanced she subtly conveys  more with her eyes and expressions. She looks beautiful  in crisp saris and high necked blouses even without make up.  Udhayanidhi has upped his game and given a solid performance as the progressive farmer, obedient son and loving husband.   The love track is very different and thier conversations are quiet, conveying a depth and maturity rarely seen on screen.

The camerawork is superb but there one too many of aerial shots.

The film touches upon socio-political topics like farmers loans, Neet etc but does not delve deeply into them.  It comes as a surprise when one realises at some point that this is actually a love story of Kannan and Bharathi. The emotional angles be it parent-son , daughter-in -law and father- in-law or husband-wife,  are well portrayed with a certain freshness, sans the usual melodrama.
However Vasundhara as Kannan's friend has not much to do and is regrettably underutilized. There are no 'villains' and the director tries to take you into another,  slow-paced world.
