Movie Review: Viduthalai part 2
The much awaited sequel of Vetrimaaran's film, hit the big screens on December 20th.
The story this time focuses on the journey of Perumal ( Vijay Sethupathi) aka Vaathiyar, whom Kumaresan, ( Soori) a young cop, had heard about and briefly met in the original.
The major portions are narrations by Perumal, who reveals portions of his life , struggle and the revolution that he and his people carried out, guided by leaders (Kishore), for the rights of the mill workers and common village folk.
As the story unfolds, we come across his meeting with his lady love ( Manju Warrier), who later becomes his life partner.
As the batch of cops struggle to escort him via the thick forests in the hills , many Screven secrets unfold. What happens to Perumal? How does Kumaresan react?
The film is high on drama and suspense and the trip through the forests is full of suprises, enough to keep the viewer engaged and invested in what's going on.
Chetan as the vile cop is up to no good in the sequel as well, while Rajiv Menon displays his nuanced histronics in keeping with the demands of his role. There are several of the supporting cast like Gautham Menon, Balaji Sakthivel and the like who do thier bit.
Soori steals the show towards the climax, proving yet again his mettle as an actor, even though in comparison to part one, its Sethupathi who is the focal point this time. Bhavani Sre makes only a brief appearance.
Vijay Sethupathi does full justice to yet another meaty role and lives the part in the period drama. The film is heavy on the dialogues almost giving a docu-drama feel in places, but its to Sethupathi's credit that he manages to pull it off, keeping the viewer engaged.
There are emotional highs in several places but accompanied by gory bloodletting, sometimes dont quite create the impact desired.
The camerawork and the bgm elevate the film, as do the suspense filled shootouts in the thick jungles.
The film carries socio- political messaging, which may or may not appeal to different sections of the audiences.
Overall, with its dramatic staging, nuanced performances of the leads and well chosen supporting cast, Viduthalai part 2 delivers the essence of its messages bringing to the fore a tale of politics of power and struggle against oppression with a blend of raw emotions and emotional depth.
