Movie Review : Veerayi Makkal
When Ayyanar ( Suresh Nandha) visits his family in the village, he finds a huge war of words happening between his family and the inmates of the opposite house comprising his uncle's family. The two families don't talk with each other, and often fight instead.
One day, quite by chance, he lands up at his father's sister's ( Deepa Sankar) home and meets her daughter, Eeswari( Nandana Anand). Ayyanar is stunned to hear that he even has an aunt because his family ĥas never talked about her.
The young couple fall in love but Eeswari is scared of dreaming about marriage since their families are enemies. But Ayyanar assures her that one day all the family members will unite.
One day, Ayyanar gets angry with his father ( Vela Ramamoorthy) and blames him for the rift. Hearing this, his mother ( Rama) tells him that his father is not to blame. She elaborates with the backstory about his grandmother Veerayi, who had 3 sons and a daughter. But something happened which changed all their lives.
Who was Veerayi? What caused the rift amongst the 3 loving brothers and the sister? Does Ayyanar marry his love? Does the family ever unite?
The film is a family drama high on emotions, showing the importance of relationships.
Vela Ramamoorthy as the eldest brother does a splendid job while Marimuthu lends credibility to his role with a splendid performance.
The importance of living together as a family is highlighted at every instance, setting a sound example of family values, much needed in this age of nuclear families.
However a bit more crisper editing of the emotional scenes which seem long drawn out at various instances, would have have established more of a connect. A bit of the melodrama in several scenes, like those with Deepa Shankar for instance, could have been reduced.
That being said, the dialogues about family ties, the significance of roots within one's village and keeping one's links to one's native village or hometown are well brought out, touching an emotional chord in the viewer. The scenes with the village elderly lady are impressive for their dialogues, as are touching scenes of the reunion with the third brother and his family.
The visuals are good and so are the bgm and songs.
A clean family entertainer, without any drunken scenes, bad language nor violence and gore, Veerayi Makkal highlights a well delivered noble message of family unity, with oodles of family sentiment, humor and emotions.
