Movie Review : Bison
Kittan ( Dhruv Vikram) is a talented kabaddi player in the tiny hamlet he lives in. But his father ( Pasupathy) is determined not to let him explore his talent, because he is afraid that the brutal caste politics of the village may end up harming his son.
However, Kittan's prowess slowly but surely catches the eye of kabaddi teams thanks to a teacher ( Aruvi Madhan) and finally with more support from his sister (Rajisha Vijayan) he starts playing and ends up as a state level player.
But his journey is far from easy. Fear and lonliness are his constant companions, as caste wars explode all around him in a world he doesnt quite fathom. With all the turmoil and struggle, he is finally on the cusp of playing for India. Does he get through? What happens next?
Rajisha and Anupama Parameswaran deliver stellar performance while Pasupathy with a meaty role, delivers yet another noteworthy act.
The supporting cast of Lal, Ameer, Aruvi Madhan and others deliver peak performances.
The film, with its raw action, both gritty and breathtaking visuals (Ezhil Arasu K) and strong emotional highs, brings out the unbridled fury, power politics, caste warfare and idealogical battles of the milieu it is set in and what obstacles Kittan has to overcome to reach the top. Nivas K Prasanna's songs and bgm are exemplary.
Several scenes linger in the mind long after, thanks to Mari Selvaraj's masterful portrayals
On the flip side, there is a lot of gory, gut wrenching and bloody violence in many scenes, which are tough to watch. Some of them also get repetitive after a while. The first half moves frenetically whereas the second half allows for more emotional moments to sink in.
Overall, Bison Kaalamaadan brings to the fore a brilliant performance by Dhruv Vikram in the titular role, in a tense, gripping and rivetting sports drama rooted to the milieu its set in.
