Movie Review: Thanal

Image
Director Ravindra Madhav's Thanal revolves around a young cop recruit ( Atharvaa Murali) on his first day, who along with his 3 colleagues, stumbles upon a strange area in the city,  where a group of powerful gang of bank robbers led by Ashwin Kakumanu, who actually have even more nefarious plans to cause murder and mayhem. As the plot  unravels, the four recruits find themselves outnumbered and helpless. Do they manage to save the public and their fellow cops from impending doom? Who are the  villains and why are they on a revenge spree? Atharvaa as the dynamic and quick thinking cop delivers a noteworthy performance. Ashwin Kakumanu has a meaty role which he delivers with a certain gravitas, his eyes reflecting the inner angst and steely grit. The duo both excel in the action blocks, which are superbly chorepgraphed all through. The camerawork is fantastic, capturing the goings on in the dimly lit slum quarter while the set design deserves mention. The well render...

While Mani, who is vulnerable and unable to bear the toxicity, wants to leave with Kathir, the latter  is determined to stay, and  to unite the villagers and firmly believes he will achieve his goal come what may.  But tragedy strikes when his sister Prabha (Shivatmika) discovers that he is dead.  Varadharajan ( Kumaravel) a strong social activist  is found dead one day.  He is a tenant in the house of  Kumaran (Kumaran) an aspiring film director  who  now comes under suspicion for murder. But as begins to reveal to cops about how many enemies Varadharajan  had over the years due to his activism, the list of suspects grows longer. Now its upto Kumaran and his friend ( Payal Radhakrishnan) to find out the truth in order to save Kumaran from jail.  So, who killed Varadharajan? Does Kumaran arrive at the truth?  The film is a dark comedy from Balaji Venugopal and  comes with his characteristic wit and dark humor.  The plot is interesting and the screenplay runs at a steady pace, with ample twists that help to keep you glued to the screen.   There are characters aplenty  each with their quirks, that keeps the laughs coming, often in the most unexpected places, which raises the entertainment quotient. In short neve...

Arjun Das in new avatar in Bomb!

Image
Actor Arjun Das is one Kollywood artiste who has been growing from strength to strength in his career.  His mesmerising eyes, deep baritone voice and incredible acting chops made him an instant hit with  audiences and a favourite of directors who cast him as the menacing, gun- wielding,  brooding, unpredictable villain. But in Vishal Venkat's directorial, Bomb , releasing today on September 12th, Arjun Das has been given an opportunity to explore a different facet of his personality.  Cast along with the ever-impressive Kaali Venkat as his best buddy in the film,  Arjun metamorphosises into a diminutive, harmless, emotional and innocent character, battling his own mental demons, a far cry from his previous screen roles. His he finds his real strength is part of the story.   Arjun's quiet but impactful and  impressive performance in the film is noteworthy and will hopefully, open doors for directors to look at the potential to explore this...
