Movie Review: Mahasena

Sengottavan ( Vemal ) and his wife Bommi ( Shrusti Dange) live in a mountain village and are leaders of the people. Sengottavan has an enemy in the tribal leader Ganga ( Mahina Ghupta) who was once his lover at a young age, but the duo were separated due to a village feud with a statue at the centre of it all.

Now,  Ganga is baying for his blood and wants to kill Sengottavan and get back the village deity as well. In the mix is a corrupt cop (John Vijay) who also wants the statue. But he is working in cahoots with the tycoon King Of God ( Kabir Duhan Singh) who cruelly tortures the villagers and steals the statue with the help of the cops.

What happens next? Is Sengottavan able to save the deity and his village from destruction? Is the dispute between the rivals solved in the process?

The film has  an interesting premise, and the makers seemed to have worked in difficult hilly  terrain, which adds credibility to the film.

The tribals look ferocious and so do the. villains. Ganga is shown as a fierce fighter and lives up to the image till the end with an impressive  performance as a warrior princess. Vijay Cheyon as her partner, shines in every frame,  with his body build and fierce look.

Vemal, though having delivered a solid act, however doesnt seem aptly cast, his lean frame not seeming plausible enough to combat fierce tribals and the villains. Srusti  Dange looks the part of the village dweller and delivers a credible performance.

John Vijay is getting repetitively cast with peedictable dialogues and body language and his predictable dialogues and menacing body language are getting repetitive to watch.

Yogi Babu though in a different role seems under utlilised.

While the  camerawork is good, the stunt sequences which are many,  stand out. The tribal look and detailing is well done and actors aptly chosen to add credibility.

The shots showing  the majestic presence of the elephant in the story,  add  to the film.

However, the way the promising plot progresses, doesnt quite lead up to anything substantial, with a long drawn out climax, that somehow leaves more questions than answers.

Overall, a well mounted film on a grand scale,  with an interesting premise that could have done with more indepth writing and better use of a large, talented cast.
