Web Series Review: Thadayam
SI Adhyaman ( Samuthirakani) investigates a gruesome twin murder of 2 couples in a village. While his superiors dismiss his intelligence, his senior officer Lakshmi (Sshivada) believes in him and makes him part of a special team to nab the culprits.
Thanks to Adhyaman's skills the task force manages to trace possible suspects in a hamlet in a border town in Andhra Pradesh. As they begin to dig deeper, several layers emerge which link the case to events dating back to 1995.
Who are the kiĺlers ? Do cops Adhyaman and Lakshmi manage to nab them? What obstacles and dangers come in their way?
The crime story allegedly based on true events is a slow burn but gripping cat -and- mouse investigative cop thriller. The first few episodes set the backdrop and character details.
What follows is a chilling series of encounters between the cops and villainous characters (played by Prem and Raj Tirandasu). While both look menacing and are superb choices, Raj ( Pushpa, OG, and other films) stands out for his body language and powerful expressions, making him an actor to watch out for after this debut in Kollywood.
Samuthirakani plays a cop but a different one from his previous outings, and pulls it off most credibly as usual, and is the mainstay of the series, his first web series on ott.
Sshivada as Lakshmi gets a meaty and lengthy role as a senior cop which she carries off with grace and dignity, in a neat performance.
The series also explores emotional angles and human facets of its characters, a factor that draws in the viewer and keeps him invested in the fate of the characters.
The camerawork for its color tones, palette and angles, and the solid bgm, all stand out in the series while the director successfuly creates an atmosphere akin to the period setting with the art department bringing his vision to reality. The crisp run time is a plus.
The suspense and tension filled moments are aplenty. There are no distracting elements draw attention away from the story.
On the flip side, things are not always clearly explained in places. Early in the series the identity of the villains is revealed, which may not be palatable to some fans of thrillers. Some portions about motive are left unexplained. Certain scenes are gory, even more so in close-ups.
Overall, Thadayam makes for a rivetting watch, with ample suspense and nail- biting moments, solid performances and good making. Another solid series from Zee 5 Tamil.
