Movie Review: Others

Image
A city cop ( Aditya Madhavan ) gets close on the heels of a gang who is indulging in human traficcing of orphan girls by marrying them to goons and indulging in selling their eggs infused with a strange ingredient. His fiancee ( Gouri Kishan ), who is a doctor, uncovers clues of this scam in the hospital she works in, when strange symptoms emerge in women undergoing IVF treatment. How are these incidents connected? Who is orchestrating it all and why? Are their lives in danger? Director Abin seems to have explored an unusual subject and kudos for that.  He manages to make a taut investigative thriller, combining the medical aspect along with an emotional message at the climax. Though in the first half there seems to be some long drawn out detailed dialogues, it's in the second half that the story picks up speed and races to an interesting climax. With a sound technical team as support, the film manages to retain viewer attention.  Sound performances from the supporting actors ...

Movie Review: Vattakaanal

Image
Varsha ( Meenakshi Govindarajan) returns to the hill city after several years, to take care of her deceased father's( Mano) huge estate. But what she encounters there leaves her stunned, as a local bigwig ( RK Suresh) has his eyes on the estate, in order to grow mushrooms as drugs in Vattakhanal. He tries every trick to get the estate, even though his own brother ( Dhruvan Mano) is in love with her.  What happens next? Does greed and evil win or does justice prevail? The film is made on a grand scale with brrathtaking visuals of Nature. The songs are filmed beautifully set to melodious tunes. The lead actors Dhuruvan and Meenskshi deliver notworthy performances. The stunt scenes are well choreographed. But while the film begins on an intetresting note the screenplay rambles in different directions that are confusing and distracting. RK Suresh does well as the menacing manipulative villain but the film overall could have done with better writing to crisper edits to make for...

Movie Review : Cristina Kathirvekan

Image
Kathirvelan ( Kaushik Ram ) and Cristina are ( Pratibha )from two different worlds though from the same hamlet. An innocent bond develops between them through chance meetings. But Kathirvelan has to forego his love, as Cristina is going to have an  arranged marriage  soon. Things look bleak for him, when something happens that leads to more meetings between them.  Will the new cicumstances enable his love to be reciproated? What happens next? The leads, Kaushik and Pratibha have done a fantastic  job of bringing the characters to life. Be it the innocent yearning, small steps in understanding each other,  the hesitancy in acknowledging their love - the actors bring it all out superbly. The film is peppered by many such small incidents which show what they are going through , or longing for. The  village life  is well brought out.  But the screenplay is a tad slow at times.  The music by NR Raghunathan has some fine melodies. The visuals are g...
