Movie Review: Devara
The much awaited Jr NTR starrer Devara hit theatres today.
In a group of hamlets close to the sea, live 4 clans, each headed by different chiefs, which include Saif Ali Khan and Devara ( Junior NTR). Known for their bravery and skills, they are hired by nefarious elements to rob containers off the coast in mid sea, at great risk to their lives.
However, one day Devara has a change of heart when he learns that the goods they are stealing are actually weapons involved in killing innocent people and causing mayhem in the country.
After this, he issues a ban on such activities, much to the chagrin of the other chiefs, who now wish to remove him from their path. What happens next?
Shine Tom Chacko, Prakash Raj, Abhimanyu Singh, Saif Ali Khan, Murli Sharma, and a host of actors make up the cast, adding value with their presence.
Anirudh Ravichander's resounding bgm and songs, elevate the film, adding considerably to the several mass moments all through.
Jahnvi Kapoor, debuting in the South, appears in the second half and makes her presence felt with her oomph and charm , looking svelte and shining in the famed chuttamalle song.
Junior Ntr, the man of the masses, is seen in a dual role as father and son. The mass moments, and superbly choreographed action blocks, be it on land and on the sea, the consignment fights on ships, the fights between Saif and Devara and their henchmen for the ritual weapons transfer, the jungle chases and the hand to hand combats with a plethora of interesting weaponry are some of the high points in the film.
Junior Ntr plays both roles perfectly ( his Tamil dubbing is on point) and smartly brings out the differences in both characters, adding to the entertainment quotient.
Sabu Cyril's has done wonders in the production design and art department, carving out a fantastic and believable world on the mountains with acute attention to the minutest details right from homes, weaponry, the boat designs, the village environment, using the grey and red palettes to advantage. The vfx and sound departements and Ratnavelu's expert camerawork have also done justice to story.
On the flip side, there are portions that seem repetitive and one feels there is many a fight that seems redundant. The relationship between Saif Ali Khan and Devara could have been worked out more in detail. The dark grey backdrop palette may get a tad tedious to watch at times.
Watch out for an interesting climax as a lead to part 2.
Devara, is playing in theatres in several languages, from today.
