Movie Review : Gandhi Kannadi

Kadhir ( Kpy Bala) and Geetha ( Namita Krishnamurthy) run  an event management agency. One day Gandhi Mahaan ( Balaji Sakthivel) a security man, approaches them to conduct a grand renewal of vows ceremony for his beloved wife  Kanamma ( Archana) on their wedding anniversary.

The cost of such a large event is hefty, far beyond his means. It is then that Kadhir discovers that Gandhi  is actually a rich landowner, who had left his family after marriage. Through one property, Gandhi manages to get the required amount.

But just when things seem to be going right , something happens  that renders their dreams almost impossible to realise.

What happens next?

The film is a warm, slice of life movie,  highlighting  the significance of relationships, at every stage in life.  Through the older couple, the young ones learn a thing or two about what true love means.

But while the film has a noble intention and some much needed messages for modern society on issues like love, contentment and not taking your loved ones for granted,  it's the screenplay which seems to get in the way of actually being able to connect with the characters more deeply.

While Balaji Sakthivel does a superb job in portraying the innocent Gandhi, and the scenes with Archana are delightful  to watch,  one never gets to know how or why he became the utterly trusting and innocent man with quirks aplenty. The flashback scenes are well captured with Aaradhya and Manoj as the younger versions.

In his debut film Kpy Bala has done well, from dancing to action and emotions. Though he does seem on shaky ground in a few emotional scenes, he makes up for it with strong screen presence and bouts of witty dialogues.

Namita Krishnamurthy is convincing as the sweet and very much in love,  supportive Geetha and shines in the pre climax scenes. But the chemistry between the duo seems tough to find.

The non linear screenplay gets a tad confusing to keep up with in the second half but the film seems to make up for it with strong performances and an emotional climax, despite some nagging doubts about logic, and  the way situations scenes seem to be a tad disjointed. Several supporting cast members dont seem to be fully utilised and remain on the fringes. A tad more fleshing out of the characters would have helped in establishing a stronger bond.

The songs are well choreographed and the stunts realistically done.

Overall, a clean family entertainer with a social message.
