Movie Review: Demonte Colony 2
A young widow, Debbie ( PriyaBhavani Shankar) is in search for the reason behind the mysterious death of her husband Sam.
After a series of investigations, Debbie discovers that Srinivasan ( Arulnithi) who is in a coma due to an accident, is in danger of losing his life along with his brother, a rich tycoon Raghunandan (Arulnithi) as both are affected by an evil force that attacks anyone reading a particular book and after that enters a house in Demonte Colony. The event happens every 6 years.
According to the details in the book, if any one saves the life of the victim then the chain of deaths will be broken forever.
Will Debbie and Raghunandan be able to break that chain? What dangers do they find themselves in , in the process? Do they survive?
The making of the film is on a grand scale and the solid BGM of Sam CS helps to elevate the action and horror scenes, adding to the suspense and thrills of the genre.
The vfx and camerawork are handled well. The sound effects team deserves kudos though at times the BGM is a tad too loud.
The art department too has done a fine job, which adds flavour to the film and the genre.
Priya Bhavani Shankar shines in the role of Debbie with an impressive performance. Be it fear, desperation or courage she displays a perfect grasp over her role.
Arulnithi in a dual role does full justice to both roles , credibly portraying the rich brat who later has a change of heart, and shows his courageous side, and also the innocent brother struggling for life. He raises the thrill factor in a surprise twist to his role in the second half. A well written role which he delivers with a neat and nuanced performance.
Archana Ravichandran makes a brief but impressive appearance as do Dsering Dorjee as Daoshi and Arun Pandian as Richard.
Unlike the usual methods used to ward off ghosts in most films, here, Buddhist monks are shown helping Debbie, in well mounted, interesting and gripping sequences which are the highlight of the film.
There are scenes which stand out, like those in the chinese restaurant, the mirror scenes and the hospital sequences amongst others.
Gnanamuthu spends time in detailing, with a plethora of different symbols, cults, chants, evil figures and stories dating back in history, to add flavour to the story.
On the flip side, the screenplay moving in a non- linear manner needs full attention and can be confusing at times. For lovers of the genre, there are not enough really scary moments. The bgm sometimes drowns out the dialogue. Not enough time is given for the viewer to actually connect to the plight of the characters.
Overall, Demonte Colony 2 is worth a watch for lovers of the genre, with its rich making, sound performances and thrilling moments galore.
