Movie Review : Aalan

Aalan, is a coming of age film of self-discovery, which centres around a young man Thyagu (Vetri Sudley)who is very much disturbed due to events in his early life

As a youth, he flees to Kashi and becomes a monk, in an effort to find peace.

But when his nightmares increase, he decides to go back to Chennai and search for his relative who he had left behind.

In this journey to finding himself and his love for writing, he meets two beautiful souls, Janani Thomas and Thamarai (Mathura, Anu Sitara) who help him forward in his path of self -discovery.

What, happens to our hero during this journey? Does he get over his trauma and find peace?

The effort of debut director Siva R to showcase the struggle of a man to find himself is laudable. The scenic vistas of the banks of the Ganges in Kashi are beautifully captured, while even as the movie shifts to  Chennai and Puducherry, the camera seeks out beauty in daily life, making for some lasting visuals.

The actors have done a solid job in presenting the vision of the director. Vetri shines in  a realistic performance in a role very different from his previous ones  while Mathura as the German girl is a delight to watch,  with her expressive visage and calming presence. Anu Sitara too is impressive and charming bringing a gravitas with her presence and role in the story.

This is not a run of the mill commercial venture. But better dialogues and more detailing about the characters could have helped us feel more for them.  The twists in the tale too are not very organic and some scenes could have done with better writing. At some places one feels vibes of watching a school play. The slow, lengthy dialogues may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Overall, a different attempt to convey a message of self-fulfilment and what it means to truly find oneself.
