Movie Review : Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil
Jeevarathinam ( Jiiva) is a polular politocian in a small village, and keeps himself involved in the local affairs and trouble -shooting for families, in the constant hope of garnering votes.
One day, an unexpected quarrel breaks out between two rival neighbours, ilavarasu and Mani ( Ilavarasan and Thambi Ramaiah), due to the fact that amidst the pre -wedding celebrations of Ilavarasu's daughter, (Prathana Nadhan) the Mani's old father passes away and he insists that the funeral procession be taken out the next morning, at the exact same timing as the wedding next door. This becomes a major problem as both houses are in very close proximity without any boundary wall, which would create chaos caused by a funeral and a wedding next to each other.
Jeeva tries his best to intervene but due to past rivalries, neither of the stubborn, egotistical men refuse to change the timing of the muhurtham nor funeral.
Things get further complicated when a rival politico enters the fray to add fuel to the fire.
As the situation turns explosive, Jeeva is at the end of his tether. What happens next? Who wins in this fight for one- upmanship? At what cost? How are the villagers involved and impacted by this fight?
The film is a comedy of errors which works thanks to its quirky characters, stellar cast, fast -paced screenplay with never- a -dull- moment on screen and its crisp run time.
For Jiiva this is a fun role and he is in his element, bringing a maturity and charm to his performance conveyed with a light-hearted yet purposeful body language and expressions which he excels at. He holds the film together effortlessly and delivers a resounding message at the climax. Kudos to the actor for attempting a different kind of film, a well- suited fit which brings out another aspect of his capabilities as an engaging , sincere and credible performer, carrying the film effortlessly on his shoulders.
Thambi Ramaiah delivers a show- stealer act yet again as the stubborn villager who throws things into chaos for everyone, without any regrets. Ilavarasan is the perfect foil to him and elevates the film further with his presence.
The scenes involving the groom are thoroughly enjoyable and his unexpected ending scenes with the bride, give the film a mature touch, throwing in a subtle message of what love and real caring are all about. An emotional, touching moment in all the humor and chaos.
On the flip side, there is a lot of shouting and drama all through with never a quiet moment which can seem repetitive at times.
Watch out for a stupefying, action-packed, rousing climax with hard hitting dialogues and a purposeful take on society at large.
Rooted in nativity, with a plethora of interesting characters, engaging twists, stellar performances by a well chosen cast, TTT is an exhilerating rush, a tightly paced, enjoyable, emotionally charged, fun-filled, family drama and a solid entertainer, with a noble social message thrown in.
