Movie Review : Black

Vasanth ( Jiiva) is a volatile young man who one night, picks up a fight with a guy in a bar. On the way back the same guy attacks their car. Shaken by all this, Aranya ( Priya Bhavani Shankar) decides they should go for a holiday to their beach villa for a few days.

Once there a strange sequence of events starts plaguing the duo. Being the only people staying in the unoccupied villa resort, they find themselves caught up in inexplicable situations with no help in site.

What is the reason for their plight? How is an event that happened in the sixties, connected to their situation? Do they finally manage to make it to safety?

Based on a Hollywood movie, Black is a sci-fi thriller with minimum characters but thanks to its engaging screenplay  and  chemistry between the leads, manages to hold your attention all through.

There are times when things seem to get repetitive, due to the nature of the mysterious factor  of the story. But it to the credit of consummate actors Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar, who keep the viewer invested in their tale. Jiiva delivers a finely honed act, bringing out the layers in his personality with credible ease. Priya acts as the perfect foil with her effortless act. Be it dialogue delivery, body language or their expressions, neither of them go over the top,  and seem in perfect synch with the tone of the movie.

Gokul Benoy's camerawork is a big plus, given the major night setting of the movie,  and adds to the mystery value in a classy, underplayed way. The setting too is commendable. Sam CS' music and bgm add to the mood and mytsery of the film.

Vivek Prasanna is in two different avatars and does a good job of it yet again.

The film also delves into human emotions, and the impact of little incidents on relationships, and how small decisions can create big impacts. This leads to constant twists in the story, keeping the viewer empathetic and on  edge at the same time.

On the flip side, though interesting  concepts of Time loops, wormholes and multiple realities is tackled, the info overload can get a tad confusing for the viewer. The final portions dont really explain the impact of all this on the couple and thier future, which could have created a connect with the characters.

Further, the repetitive quality integral to the story, though unique, means that you have to fully concentrate.

However, Black still manages to stand out for its bold attempt to give Tamil cinema audiences a slick, stylishly made sci-fi thriller with ample human drama, with ample substance, rivetting performances, slick editing and sound design, top notch camerawork and bgm, making for c an edge-of-the-seat,  gripping watch.
