Movie Review : Kingston.
Kingston ( GV Prakash) lives in a tiny fishing hamlet, which has been affected by a curse due to which anyone who steps into the sea for fishing returns as a corspse.
One day, deeply affected by the death of a young lad in the village, Kingston is determined to find out the reason and mystery of the cursed sea and to solve it even at the cost of his life so that the village can flourish again.
With his close friends Kingston sets out into the sea in his boat one stormy night.
What happens therafter is a hair -raising series of events mid sea. What happens to Kingston and his friends? Is the curse lifted?
The first half sets the backstory of the characters while the second half carries the fantasy horror aspect of the story towards a most gripping, chilling and engrossing climax sequence.
While it takes a bit of patience to grasp the backstories of the various characters, the screenplay soon switches to top gear in the second half, as the story gathers momentum.
There is a message in the film about human greed versus inherant goodness and humanity which comes through superbly at the climax.
GV Prakash in a complete makeover, looks every inch the character with yet another winning performance. The action scenes on the boat and mid- ocean would not have been easy to do but the actor effortlessly gets it right. He shines further in the emotional scenes conveying his thoughts and emotions in a nuanced and controlled manner with a measured dialogue delivery that adds conviction to the scenes.
Divya Bharti gets her look just right and gives a solid and impactful performance in the screen space given in the story.
Chetan stands out in the scenes he appears in while all the supporting cast too deliver convincing performances all of which succeed in establishing an emotional connect
The making is grand and the visuals by Gokul Benoy are fantastic as is the vfx. The bgm adds to the film and the rasa rasa song is memorable.
On the flip side, it takes time for the first half to sink in fully as one has to keep track of non-linear narration and new characters that appear at regular intervals. A bit of editing there would have been a welcome feature for crisper viewing. Some of the action is gruesome to watch.
Overall a different and story, superb vfx, visuals and action sequences in mid sea, solid performance by GV Prakash and the cast a sound bgm, and a positive takeaway message make Kingston an engrossing watch.
