Movie Review : Sumo

A young man Shiva ( mirchi shiva) works as a surfing coach for a centre run by his mentor ( VTV Ganesh). He loves a girl in the neighbourhood (played by Priya Anand). One day, a Japanese man ( Toshiro) is washed ashore on beach. He is found by Shiva who takes him under his care,  his mind being like that of a toddler . Shiva is shocked to discover one day  that the man he calls Ganesh, is actually a Japanese Sumo wrestler, renowned in his country.

But he also discovers that Ganesh  life is in danger. Now Shiva is determined to take him home to Japan and to safety. Does he accomplish the task successfully?  Does Ganesh  get back his memory?

The film is well made with pleasant visuals, an interesting storyline set in the unusual backdrops of surfing in India and Sumo in Japan, and a large ensemble cast of actors who keep the proceedings interesting.

The Japanese actor does a good job at his role while the banter between Vtv Ganesh and Shiva does roll in the laughs from time to time.

Priya Anand fits her role and she adds value by her presence and the camaraderie between the leads is good.

The film avoid bloodshed even when there are villains. The Japan portions and the intro to a different cultural world deserves kudos. The screenplay moves swiftly for the most part.

On the flip side,  there are a few repetitive scenes in the Japan portions and the comedy in the cop station doesnt work that well. For fans of mirchi Shiva's brand of humor, his humor may be a tad lesser than usual  as the focus is more on the Sumo wrestler and the emotional angle,  which is, however, very well played out.

Overall, with its blend of emotions, comedy, fun and exploration of a different culture,   Sumo makes for a pleasant   family watch for the summer holidays.
