Movie Review : Madharaasi

NIA TN chief Prem ( Biju Menon) and his team is hot on the chase of a dangerous gang led by Virat (Vidyut Jamwal) and his close aide Chirag  ( Shabeer)  who are unloading a deadly cache of guns in the state to spread gun culture in this new market.

When he is injured in the chase, he meets Raghu (Sivakarthikeyan), in the hospital.  Raghu is hell bent on committing suicide as his love Malathy ( Rukmini Vasanth) has left him. As a result of their interaction, and due to a series of incidents,  the NIA chief decides to involve Raghu in a suicidal and dangerous mission to hunt down the gunlords.

But once the mission is on, he learns a startling truth about Raghu which stuns him and endangers the mission.

Who is Raghu? Who is Malathy ? Is Raghu able to save the mission without endangering lives? What happens next?

What works for the film is the interesting storyline and gripping plot, supported with a super racy screenplay, involving not just  electrigying hi- octane stunts, but also emotional highs and family sentiments,  laced with classic Sivakarthikeyan style light moments  which only the actor can pull off. To top it all, you have superb performances by not just the lead pair but also the large supporting cast of Biju Menon, Vikranth, Siddharth Shankar, and the  steely villains Vidyut Jamwal and Shabeer. Looks like AR Murgadoss has chosen each actor  with careful precision and it  pays off as they contribute with realistic performances. Another plus is the detailing of  the characters, with their flaws and their merits, which  establishes a stronger connect with them.

Sivarkarthikeyan is superb in a nouveau avatar in a very different role. In the  action blocks he is all fire, fury and fisticuffs. Playing a complex character,  he handles each facet of his personality with an innocence and quiet strength.  Watch out for his realistic, hi-octane action sequences  with outstanding villains Shabeer and  Vidyut.

Sivakarthikeyan is equally tender and rouses emotions in scenes with Rukmini, who is a breath of fresh air on screen. A meaty role, for the lady and she delivers to perfection. Murgadoss has refrained from the 'bubbly heroine' concept and given her character a strong presence, quiet dignity and a key role in the story till the end.

Anirudh's music and bgm elevate the film while the sets, vfx, editing and cinematography are top notch.

On the flip side, the villains and their henchmen seem to be more adept than the highly trained NIA troops  and shoot them down with ease. Several scenes defy logic on how a top agency works. The actors working with Biju, apart from Vikranth, dont give off the vibe of alert or strong officers.

Overall, however, Madharaasi is a solid commercial family action entertainer from Sivakarthikeyan and marks the return of AR Murgadoss with a bang.
