Movie Review: Vellakuthira
Kathir ( Harish Ori )takes his wife Kayal (Abhirami Bose) and young son, up a remote mountain, returning to his native village, which they had left as a child.
He is running away from something and the family lives in fear of being found out, hence the change of place to a remote location.
Once in the village, the couple settle into their lives. But Kadhir gets into making locally brewed liquor and starts making good money which lands the family in trouble.
Kayal meanwhile helps the local people to oust a local bigwig who had bedn cheating the locals and beyraying their trust.
When Kadhir lands in trouble yet again and tries to flee, this thing Kayal gives him an ultimatum.
What does Kadhir do to redeem himself. What happens to the village folk? How do events affect their lives?
The story is a heart- warming tale of life in a remote village, the belief systems and human values of yore which have preserved the people through the ages, through tough times. Through the characters and the stories, the film brings out beautifully, all of this and how greed can destroy entire peoples but redemption is also possible.
The actors Orin and Abhirami shine with noteworthy performances, bringing to life their characters.
The supporting cast are excellent and lend a realistic touch to the proceedings.
The film takes you into a different world, successfully highlighting the plight of a remote mountain community and how greed can ruin lives.
There are few places where the narration slows down but things pick up rapidly in the second half.
A film with an emotional core, and a story that engages with the viewer in a touching manner.
