Film Review : Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam

KEM the Arya starrer hit cinemas on June 2nd, directed by Muthaiya, famed for his rural dramas.

Tamil ( Siddhi Idnani) decides to shun the village folk when they want her to marry within her  relatives, who are violent, villainous people, out to get her property. But they try their best to stop any suitor so that, she may be left with no options.

When she goes in search of a violent man,  Kathar Basha  (Arya) to various jails, her relatives follow her every move. Who is Kathar Basha? Can he help her out of her situation? What, is the secret behind his existence?

The film is a violent rural action drama dotted with oodles of family sentiment, bits of  romance and  plenty of raging emotions. To reveal more about the character of Kathar Basha would take away from the surprise elements in the story.

Muthaiya has made yet another film about large clans and family feuds, with women and property at the centre of it all.

But this time, though there are interesting elements, the overdose of violence seems like overkill. Crisper editing would have cut down the run time and the feeling of watching action scene upon action scene, stretched till one loses interest after a while.

However, the stunts which are a highlight are superbly choreographed and performed. Arya in this rugged, macho, fighter avatar looks every inch the mean machine and his hard work in the iron fisted punches, chiselled frame and angry expressions are all apparent. Kudos to the actor for pulling off the role, which appears physically exhausting. He also shines in the brief romance and dance sequences.

The chemistry with Siddhi Idnani is adequate and his scenes with Prabhu and his sister and mother,  feel organically emotional.

Siddhi shines as Tamil, and plays her  gutsy rural girl part to perfection. The duo look good together especially in the karikuzhambu song, a chart topper.

The various supporting cast members have done a good job.

The screenplay moves between past and present, and is racy. But too many action sequences and a tad too much of revenge drama, act as speed breakers   Too many relatives and their relation to each other,  are tough to keep track of as well.
