Movie Review: Election
Natarasa (Vijay Kumar) lives an idyllic life in Vellore. His dad Nallasivam ( George Maryam) is an active worker in the local political party for 40 years. Selvi ( Richa Joshi) is Natarasa's childhood love. But they are unable to get martied due to her father's political enmity with his dad. His marriage is then arranged to Hema ( Preethi Asrani) and they live a happy life.
Things change rapidly when his Kani Mama (Pavel Navageethan) brings him to politics as a candidate in the panchayat elections. Being a novice, he is unsure of things but everyone convinces him to enter politics.
From then on things begin to go downhill as he gets mired in debt and gets a whole bunch of powerful enemies, who resent his entry.
What happens next? Does Natarasa win or lose? What price does he pay for his foray into politics? What lessons does he learn?
The movie is a roller -coaster ride of emotions, frenzy, revenge, drama, plotting and scheming. Director Tamizh leaves no stone unturned to showcase the supposed harsh realities of local body elections.
The characters are well written and with different layers of each character unpeels slowly as the film progresses. Basically nothing is really what it seems from the outside and any newbie would be well adviced to tread carefully into the mire and dangerous ego games of politicos is what the film tries to impart.
The superb casting brings every character tp life and each actor seems to have lived his and her part, which adds to the realistic feel of the film.
Vijay Kumar as the fiery youngster on a mission, Preethi Asrani as his strong better half, George Maryam, Dileepan Pavel Navageethan and Nachiyaal Suganthi, all stand out with their realistic performances.
Govind Vasantha's BGM offers rock solid support to the everchanging drama on screen. The camera work brings to life the village and its surroundings and the people as they go about their lives. The film is well mounted and the screenplay is slick.
The action scenes deserve mention as well.
There are ample twists and emotional highs to keep one rivetted.
On the flip side is the extensive violence often gory and bloodied. The several characters and their political positions get a tad tough to keep track of after a while.
Overall, Election is a slickly made political drama, with excellent performances, plenty of twists, emotional highs and an engaging story laced with a social message.
