Film Review : Mylanji
Charu ( Krusha Kurup) is a rich, but innocent young girl, who is orphaned and living with an aunt and uncle in the scenic hill station of Lovedale. She falls in love with Kathir from a nearby town. But he suddenly leaves for Chennai. In the meanwhile, her aunt decides to get her married to her wayward son, much to the distate of Charu.
One day she meets a visiting bird watcher Surya (Sriram Karthik) from Chennai who falls in love with her. But to his shock Charu actually asks for his help in uniting her with Kathir, since Surya is also from Chennai. But keeping her best interests in mind, Surya decides to help her unite with her love.
However, in the process, Charu discovers that she actually has begun to love Surya now.
But does Surya reciprocate this love? What happens to Kathir? Does he return? Who does Charu marry finally?
The film is at heart a love triangle with Charu as the deciding factor, torn between her feelings.
Krisha Kurup plays her part well, as the confused, innocent girl. Sriram Karthik as the sacrificing youth, conflicted between duty and love, delivers a neat performance, superbly conveying the upheavel of emotions he goes through.
The fantastic visuals capture the pittoresque, quaint beauty of the hillstation. The misty mornings, the little flowing brooks, the quaint houses and the hilly backdrop all enhance the feel of the film.
On the flip side, the heroine character seems written as a uni dimensional one, and harks back to 80's heroine characters, having nothing much to do in life, with no clue about love, relationships or the world in general.
The story itself feels dated and the stupendous beauty of Nature in the backdrop is one of the main reasons it works out. There is a young lad who is given lines about love and longing seemingly beyond his age. In the biting cold, misty setting Charu is mostly sern in skirt and blouse, with no weather protection gear most of the time, which distracts. Surya keeps communicatimg via email to Kathir and never do either exchange numbers so that he can speak directly to Charu, which seems odd.
Overall, the film tries to convey a message, but does so in a rather round about, dated manner, with not much of a story to hold it all together , despite neat performances, good production values and superb visuals.
