Movie Review: Nee Forever
Mathi ( Archena Ravi) is an aspiring director whose producer wants her to make a romantic movie. Ajay( Sudarshan Govind) id an aspiring app creator trying to launch a dating app. They both have one thing on common. Neither of them has ever fallen in love, which they come to realise is essential in order to achieve success in their project.
By a quirk is fate they both end up on the same app looking for a date, and from them on begins a journey. Neither of them tells the other their real reason for dating.
Though they get close, when one fine day Mathi ghosts him and dumps him ( because for her, he is only content for her film) he is heartbroken.
But when a heartbroken Ajay goes to his village to visit his mom and grandfather ( YG Mahendran), to his shock, Mathi lands up there as his girfriend. His grandfather is furious because he only wants Ajay to marry a girl of his choice.
Why is Mathi in Ajay's home? What is her real motive ?How does Ajay react? Does Mathi accept his love? What does Ajay's grandfather do?
The film does seem to have a different and unique plot in its own way. But the way the screenplay works it all out, tests patience at times.
The first half is tedious to watch at times with the long winded efforts at humor with supposedly funny antics of Ajay's friends, all of which only lengthen the film.
Though the tall and dashing Sudarshan and charming beauty Archena Ravi prove their mettle as good actors who deliver a solid performance, the romantic portions dont bring out the chemistry needed to make pair click. They establish a connect in the quieter scenes when they talk from the heart, but the sequences where they are made to sprint and dance and behave like teenagers, doesnt quite fit.
The second half with its village scenes where characters actually talk and share are more real in the film.
The backstory of Ajay is well told and the family angle is given to fit in with the story explored at the climax, when Mathi changes her mind, with family sentiment playing a big role in her decision. The conversation between Mathi and Ajay's grandfather seems heartfelt and works for the film.
Mathi's reasons for leaving him and returning are not adequately explained. The way Ajay's father is brought back leaves many unanswered questions and seems contrived. Him constantly smoking and looking a tad emotionless in the emotional scenes with his son, dont quite fit in.
YG Mahendran brings a gravitas to his role and makes his presence felt. But constantly showing him slapping his daughter doesn't look good.
The making of the film is good, with pleasant visuals, peppy tracks, and sound performances. The message of the film at the climax is commendable. Overall Nee Forever makes for a good watch for both youth in similar situations and family audiences as well.
