Movie Review: Karuppu
A notorious, money minded lawyer Baby ( RJ Balaji) has a stranglehold on the corruption driven proceedings in a city court. So deep is the rot that no lawyer resists for fear of violence and greed for a cut, and even a corrupt judge ( Natty Natraj) is part of the syndicate, giving judgements in return for bribes.
In the scenario walk in an innocent duo of a father and daughter ( Indrans and Anagha Maya Ravi) who land up in court to recover stolen jewels. They urgently need the jewels in order to pay for the girls liver transplant.
But caught up in the web of deceit of Baby, they are milked dry of finances with their case dragged on endlessly.
When they have no recourse, the father prays to the powerful deity of Karuppan nearby. And lo and behold, the God himself appears in a human form ( Suriya), confronting Baby and the corrupt ones, striking terror in their hearts.
But Baby is not to be outdone. He elicits a promise from Karuppan to try and eradicate corruption from the system without using his Godly powers, as a human.
What happens next?
The film deals with a strong social message about corruption in the legal system but director RJ Balaji presents it as a satire, introducing a fantasy element, coupled with high drama and laced with comedy, to drive home the message in an engaging manner to family audiences. And this works big time in favor of the film.
Suriya as Karuppa is stupendous, with a terrific intro scene, his powerful eyes and larger than life presence, dominating the screen and coupled with Sai Abhyankkar's music and vGK Vishnu's camerawork, every frame Suriya appears is is sheer magical delight.
The dialogues are witty, with plenty of references to other films, and other music interspersed, which adds to the entertainment quotient immensely.
The cast is superb with Indrans realistic act which tugs at the heart strings, along with Anagha Maya, who delivers a moving performance. Trisha as the lawyer helping Karuppa, delivers an energetic act while Natty Natraj is,perfectly cast in his role which he carries out to perfection.
Sai Abhyankkar's vivbrant thumping songs and bgm are the backbone of the film.
It's a Suriya vehicle all the way and what a comeback it is for the Star-actor. The powerful dances, the rivetting action blocks, the fun interchanges and the thrilling moments of suspsense about what next, all make the film a superb theatrical experience, with an interesting plot, narrated in an entertaining manner so as to drive home a social message in an easy to understand, simple yet impacful manner.
