Film Review : My Lord

Suseela ( Chaithra) and Muthu Sirpi (M Sasikumar) are both orphans, raised in a hamlet, thanks to thy help of a good soul, who raises them in a orphanage, where the teachings of Saint Vallalar are deeply followed.

At a later stage in life,  the duo get married.  But soon after,  Suseela falls direly ill and from then on, thier troubles begin.

Muthu is forced to take loans due to mounting treatments and bills, inflated by unscrupulous doctors, middlemen and a loan shark.

To add  to their woes, Muthu get embroiled in a plot to make him a kidney donor to a central government minister ( Asha Sarath) who is direly ill. This involves the duo further into a quagmire of intrigue and danger to their lives from those in power.

What happens to Muthu and Suseelaa? Do they become victims or manage to escape?

Raju Murugan deals with corruption in the medical field , organ trafficking and the plight of the poor and illiertate victims on this him.  Looks like he has researched his subject, as a,well chosen supporting cast plays out different characters very convincingly. At the end as credits roll, the director showcase paper cuttings to further prove the points made.

But in this mix , he also adds a touch of humanity, in the form of an unexpected climax.

With the simple but good hearted characters like Muthu and Suseela, the film also brings to the fore the teachings of Vallalar, who preached peace and non-violence, towards all creatures.

Sasikumar is perfectly cast as a victim and delivers a credible and neat performance yet agsin. Chaithra as Suseela is mesmerising and even her silent gaze speaks volumes. Together this duo carry the film on their shoulders and make the vision of the director a belieavable reality.

Guru Somasundaram, Asha Sharath and rest of raise the bar with their realistic performance.

Cameramam Nirav Shah and music director Sean Roldan enhance the film with their work, and their labour of love is visible in every frame and note in the movie.

The film has ample suspense, pathos, emotions, ugly truths, touches of humor, a peek into human greed, the value of human lives, and the importance of humanity.

On the flip side, the film spreads ita wings in several directions which leads to a shift in focus for the viewer which proves distracting. The climax too may seem problematic to many. Some of the situations seem contrived in the film.

Overall however, My Lord makes for an  engaging, informative and  gripping watch.

Rating : 3.5 /5
