Movie Review : Rebel

Studio Green's GV Prakash starrer Rebel hits screeens today, March 22nd.

Kathir ( GV Prakash) and a group of his friends, whose parents work as labour in the  Munnar tea estates, come to study in a college in Palakkad during the 80's period, with dreams  to empower themselves for a better future.

But there, they get ragged badly and mistreated by a senior among the Malayali students,  Anthony ( Venkitesh), and his friends, who makes their life hell, as they are  juniors and moreover, Tamil- speaking students.

One silver lining for Kathir, is a co-student Sara ( Mamitha Baiju) who is kind to him. Another helpful advisor is a professor (Karunas).

But soon, no matter how much they try to cope, things get out of hand. When one of the friends, ( Adithya Bhasker) is brutally beaten by Anthony and his goons  and dies, Kathir decides to fight the college elections, realising the power of the Tamil students' vote. He wants to fight so that Tamil students  may be able to get an education smoothly since he realises how much power the two opposing student parties wield. He feels this is the only way to protect their interests no matter how tough the going gets.

But this decision leads to more problems for the students. How does Kathir solve the issues? Do the students achieve their goal  to get an education?

The film showcases  the politicisation of student unions and the rivalry between different language speaking students and the struggle for an education that students from socially and economically backward students have to undergo in order to ensure a brighter future for themselves and coming generations.

GV Prakash dives into a meaty role and successfully delivers a power packed performance, shining in every aspect of his role, from the desperation as a student struggling to survive in a hostile environment, to the fiery performance as the youth who finds his voice and hits back strongly for his rights.

Mamitha Baiju, fresh from the success of Premalu, not only fits the part perfectly, but also displays a fine performance, with subtle changes as required by her character. The scenes between the lead pair are refreshing, with a melodious, peppy, well shot song thrown in.

Venkitesh as the villain Anthony, makes his Kollywood debut from Malayalam cinema and brings out the vengeful, brutally violent senior to perfection. A solid entry for the actor as villain. The scenes between GV Prakash and him are rivetting, especially the action blocks.

The music and visuals elevate drama in the film. The action blocks are many,  and are grippingly shot, like the hostel fight scene, the various chases and fights between the students and the climax scenes to name a few. The scenes with innovative ideas  Kathir uses to campaign leave a mark.  The locations used in the film are well chosen and  aptly bring out the mood and vibe of the period setting.

The scenes involving the parents of the Tamil students are moving.

There is ample suspense and a twist in the climax to watch out for.

On the flip side, some of the fights seem repetitive and the screenplay moves too fast at times for emotions to actually sink in for the viewer. Some scenes are a tad melodramatic. The intermittant conversations in Malayalam which are one too many, serve as a dampener despite the fast-moving Tamil subtitles. Some scenes seem a tad clichéd.

Overall, Rebel is a  emotional, racy,  political actioner from debutant nikesh RS, with a fiery performance by GV Prakash in a titular role.
