Movie Review : Mask

Velu ( Kavin) solves issues for people in trouble, but for a fat price. During his dealings, he runs up against an activist with nefarious activities, Bhumi ( Andrea Jeremiah) and he undertakes a job for a missing 440 crore  cash consignment for her.

But things become complicated when he understands that he has himself accidentally become a witness to and part of  the heist of the said sum by masked men.

What happens subsequently? Whose money is it? Is he able to return it to Bhumi? What are the pitfalls of such a decision? Who are the masked men?

The film starts off interestestingly enough, with several engaging scenes and situations between Velu and his clients, betwen Velu and his new girlfriend ( Ruhani Sharma), and also scenes involving the dreaded Bhumi. While the movie is gripping and entertaining, the tension shifts to a different gear in the second half with new characters  emerging.

While the film has a crisp run time, some scenes feel leghthy and repetitive. However, the interval and climax twists are among those that make up for it all. The dark humor and witty one liners work for the movie.

The camerawork is notable and the film is shot on a grand scale. The kannumuzhi song is vibrant, colorful and catchy.

Ruhani and Kavin's romantic interlude make for an entertaining watch. While Andrea is brilliant as Bhumi Kavin gives a slick and noteworthy performance as the oppotunistic master of manipulation, Velu. Pawan shines in a cameo while Ruhani makes a mark with with a neat performance in her Tamil debut.

The movie tends to deviate from its goal from time to time. The loud bgm that keeps playing for a large part even when not required, drowning out important dialogues or voice overs, is a dampener along with few bloodied and gory scenes.

Overall, Mask is another different choice of film in Kavin's repertoire and makes for an engaging watch.
