Movie Review : Vowels
The film is an anthology of five stories with different characters.
Martin, a fashion photographer who reviews films as a hobby, meets a like- minded student Nakshatra, who is interested in cinema just like him. But after their meeting he murders her based on a film inspired method. This story ends rather abruptly with a confusing message, though the performances of the two actors is good.
Karthik( Raj Ayappan) passion is bike racing but now he has a wife and kid so cuts down on his racing. In a quirk of fate, he meets his ex- lover when his bike crashes into hers. As he admits her in hospital, the accident takes him back to his love story with Meera and the reason he parted ways with her, and brings him to a realisation.
Yugi Sethu saves a young man from suicide. He shares many insights on life and love with him. One of the stories he narrates is of Gopal (Chinni Jayanth) a single, unmarried 55 year old professor, who lost out on marriage due to family responsibilities. Does he find love again? Does this impact the young man trying to commit suicide?
The next story revolves around a nurse Lakshmi and her bed -ridden patient Aswathy, suffering from a deadly ailment which renders her depressed. But slowly hope springs in the form of a young man who pursues her, slowly eroding the walls she has built around herself. But she is confused as to what to do next. What happens to her? This story also has a message conveyed in a slow but endearing manner.
The final story is about Ron ( Bharat Bopanna) and his girlfriend, Sara , who have a common enemy. Their love is enveloped in deceit and mistrust. What happens to their love? This part though interesting, becomes a test of patience, even though the narrative style does add suspense.
A highlight and commonality in the stories are the poetic, deep meaning lyrics and melodic songs, which take the story forward and looks into the inner workings of the protagonist's mind.
Each of the stories take time to unfold in an unhurried manner, making them almost poetic in their narration. The directors seem to have chosen the slow burn route which works well for the most part, especially more so in the third story where Yugi Sethu's writing keeps you engaged along with his performance as does Chinni Jayanth's measured performance, both of which are the highlights. The story has a nice message which is conveyed most effectively via the writing, screenplay, acting and narration.
The anthology is mostly dialogue heavy so requires patience in this age of reel watching. The running theme in all is love and the different dimensions of it.
Overall, Vowels makes for an interesting watch
