Film Review : Bumper
Bumper directed by debutant M Selvakumar and produced by Vetha Pictures, S Thiagarajan, starring Vetri, Shivani, Hareesh Peradi, GP Muthu and others, hits screens on July 7th.
Summary :
Pulipandi ( Vetri) and his 3 friends indulge in thefts and petty crimes in Thoothukudi, often in cahoots with the local cops. This makes Anandi ( Shivani) his relative whom he likes, feel replused. Her parents refuse the marriage proposal by Pandi's mother due to his activities.
One day, Pulipandi goes to Sabrimala where he meets an old man Ismail ( Hareesh Peradi) who sells him a lottery ticket. As luck would have it, the ticket wins him a 10 crore bumper prize. But Pulipandi had dropped the ticket on the floor and forgotten about it. The lottery seller Ismail, had found it and kept it safely on his bag.
When the win is announced Ismail decides to go all the way to Thoothukudi to find Pulipandi and give him the ticket, even though his own family tries to dissuade him, telling him to keep the money himself.
But this is easier said than done, for he has lost the details of the man and has no clue about his whearabouts.
How does he find Pulipandi? What happens next? Does Pulipandi get the money? Who are the people plotting to grab the money?
Review:
Bumper has an unusual storyline with a fast paced screenplay that keeps you entertained and invested from the word go.
The casting is a huge plus for the film. Vetri gets into the skin of the character, bringing to life the flaws and later the changes in himself, with perfection. He aces the local accent and gets the body language just right. A superb script choice for the actor's career.
The 3 friends, the cops, pandi's mom, the moneylender (GP Muthu), Aruvi Madan, Kavitha Bharathi and every secondary character in the film, are all superbly handpicked. The casting is another big pillar of this film.
Another highlight is the performance of Malayalam actor Hareesh Peradi. The gravitas he brings to his act is a delight to watch. He makes the nobility of his intentions totally credible by his quiet soft manner, body language, but determined following of principled behaviour in the face of all opposition. A hugely different facet from his usual villain roles in movies.
The music by Govind Vasanth and the superb cinematography of P Vinod hugely add to the film and are solid pillars of the movie. Watch out for the Ayappan song in the film.
Bumper has a commendable social message for the present generation which is conveyed in a gripping, emotional, humorous and entertaining manner. The sheer unpredictability of the screenplay is another plus.
A film with its heart in the right place, this family entertainer, seems like a Bumper vetri for actor Vetri and team, with its storyline, social messaging, superb casting, performances, music, visuals and making.
Bumper, a must -watch winner all the way.
