Merry Christmas garnered much hype as the Sriram Raghavan film with the uniquely cast Katrina with Vijay Sethupathi. The bilingual film finally hit theatres on January 12th for the Pongal weekend ( in Tamil version)
The supporting cast of Hindi and Tamil happen to be different.
Albert ( Vijay Sethupathi) is a jailbird who meets Maris (Katrina) and her child, quite by chance, when he returns to his Bombay home after a long gap. The duo get to know each other over the evening and a friendship erupts and sparks seem ready to fly.
But then this is a crime thriller, so just when romance maybe brewing, a dead body , that of Jerome, her husband, turns up in her flat.

What happens next?

The fresh pairing makes for good viewing. Katrina is good as Maria, displaying a gamut of emotions all through. She never lets on quite what she's upto, and this keeps the suspense going. Sethupathi's natural performance is a delight to watch as always.

The film is a slow burn, with lots of conversation, quiet moments, slow reveals as the layers peel off, till a crescendo is reached in a stunning climax.

The supporting  cast do a solid job of it, and the second half has moments of humor thrown in right in the midst of a murder investigation. Sriram keeps you guessing and tense till the very end.
The bgm is is a big support, drawing you into the period setting and taking you on a thrill ride till the climax.
The sets, though a tad cluttered, deserve mention and add to the visual spectacle of the tale. The chrstmas setting is there for a reason.
For lovers of who dunnits and crime thrillers,  the journey may prove a tad slower than usual.  There are so many reveals in the second half that it takes time and effort to let it sink in. The chemistry between the leads, just about gets there but does not really take off.

A classy, slow burn romantic crime thriiler, watch it for the lead performances, a nostalgic trip to a quieter time, Sriram's trademark surprises and a terrific climax.
