Movie Review: Sotta Sotta Nanaiyathu

Raja ( Nishanth Russo) is a rich young man of marriageable age. But his parents find it impossible to find a bride for him,  as all the girls reject him because he is balding. Even his friends keep body shaming him jokingly.

Pushed to the edge, Raja almost gives up on getting married,  when luck throws him a boon in the form of a young girl (Shaalini) who loves him for who he is.

But on the eve of his wedding,  Raja discovers a secret about his bride -to -be, which shatters him.  What does Raja do next? Does he ever find love and acceptance for who he is?

The film, a comedy,  attempts to present the plight of people who are body shamed for no fault of theirs and who undergo trauma as a result. Though the aim of the film seems noble and it does drive home the messages it seeks to impart,  somewhere along the way, it begins to get repetitive. The wit and punches dont quite land many a time and  the overtly loud BGM with various supposedly comic sounding noises, doesnt quite help in garnering the desired effect.

Though the lead actors have done a fine job, one wishes they could have been given more emotional depth to establish a connect.

Nishanth Russo, a talented actor,  gets into the skin of the character superbly conveying the frustration and anguish of his character. The parents and the heroines Shaalini and Varshini Venkat  too have done a fine job,  all elevating the film with their performances.

The second half picks up momentum and there are some intetesting portions showcasing the current internet and social media addiction in society, which affects human relationships. Varshini pulls off her scenes convincingly and in an entertaining manner.

The film ends with a message imparted without any preaching. But a bit more emotional heft, and connect with characters would have perhaps made for a more entertaining experience.
