Movie review: Surrender

Pugazh ( Tharshan) is a young  and bright cop.  One day, the case of a missing gun in his station comes to him, when an elderly cop Periyasamy (Lal) is accused of losing the gun  of famed actor Mansur Ali Khan.

As the hunt for the missing gun begins, parallely we are drawn into the world of a local don, Kanagu ( Sujith) who is hunting for a missing large cash amount he had given to a corrupt cop for safekeeping during elections.

Things get tangled up when the worlds of Puhazh, Kanagu, Periyasamy all collide due to a series of circumstances.

Who has got the missing gun? Is Pugazh able to meet the deadline of finding it? What dangers are in store for the cops from Kanagu and his gang ?

The movie is a thrilling blend of a whodunnit investigative thriller and comedy, taking one seamlessly through the worlds of  corrupt cops and gangs, as also upright cops like Pugazh. The investigative angle is well handled, keeping up the suspense till the end. The screenplay moves steadily forward but at times long drawn out dialogues break the momentum, which could have been avoided. The different facets of how police officers handle petty politics at the workplace and work under pressure at the same time are well brought out. The solid supporting cast is an asset

Munishkanth brings in the humor track to the proceedings. Tharshan, a fine actor,  looks every inch the cop, and skillfully handles a solid role with finesse and perfect body language; his tall frame and well -built physique coupled with his subtle yet impactful expressions, bringing credibility to  his role.

Sujith stands out as the villain along with Lal's performance as the aged, emotional but steadfast cop. The emotional angle between Tharshan and Lal adds depth to the action drama.

While sticking to the action cop drama genre, the film also has a romantic angle towards the  ending to watch out for.

The stunts are well choreographed, while the bgm is adequate for the situations. The edit team could have eased out a few portions with some trimming.

Surrender, a good outing for Tharshan, makes for a neat watch for fans of the genre.
