Movie Review: Vadam
Ratnavel Pandian ( Natty Natraj) is proud to be the champion winner of a bull sport conducted on his village. So when a young man Vetrivel ( Vemal) comes in with his champion bull and walks away with the prize, Ratnavel is filled with anger and wants to buy the prize bull.
But when Vetrivel refuses as he loves his animal dearly, Ratnavel hatches a plot.
But things dont go according to plan and his act sets off a chain reaction, inadvertantly affecting the lives of many people.
What happens to Vetrivel and his bull? How is Ratnavel impacted?
The film is well made with solid production values. The story starts off with two calves and basically revolves around them, weaving in a story around characters around them in an interesting manner.
The director has got his casting right and every actor justifies his presence by a solid performance.
Natty Natraj is perfectly cast and get the raw, rustic power hungry look just right and coupled with his dialogue delivery and body language gives a powerful performance.
Vemal, sinks his teeth into his character and delivers an impactful performance, and brings out splendidly his love and bond with his bull, which forms the crux of the story. He excels not only in the dramatic scenes but also in the action blocks, especially the climax fight with Natty.
The film brings out well, the bond between man and animals in the rural heartlands and though shooting with the majestic bulls is no easy task, the camera department pulls off rich visuals and in synch with the edit team, the portions of the sport are stirring, and emotionally charged as well.
Sankasha Sri gives a strong performance in a meaty role while the suprise package is Munishkanth who gets a well written role and delivers a fiery , emotional act.
The screenplay gives no room for lags and the story and twists keep you hooked. The songs are well shot with good choreography and D Imman's tracks bring to life the charged atmosphere of the rural drama. The bgm gives ample space for dialogues and nowhere is it jarring or over the top ( unlike many action dramas nowadays) which adds to the cinematic experience.
Overall Vadam is gripping, emotional, visually rich, well mounted, rooted, rural drama which gives out subtle messages sans preaching, with solid performances, a massy, energetic feel and a touching story.
