Movie Review: Rao Bahadur

Ramappa Rao Bahadur ( Sathyadev) is now an aged man, belonging to  a royal lineage that he is proud of. He is delusional and undergoing treatments for his various diseases, overseen by family doctor Achari ( Vikas Muppala). His main aim is to find out whether his second son, now deceased as a child, was actually his own or not,  as he strongly suspects his wife Renuka( Deepa Thomas).

Though Achari is hell bent on avoiding the exhumation of the body,  Ramappa refuses to give up. What happens to him? Does he discover the truth he seeks?

The plot follows a non-linear narration which takes getting used to.  It also needs the viewer to be alert to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

The visuals are amazing, be it the palace( the interior and exterior of it), the rich song sequences with exciting looks and costumes, props and color along with the interesting choreography on keeping with the song lyrics. The vfx team too deserves kudos as do the costume and make up teams, for their intricate detailing which makes the result richly engaging.

The film takes a look into various themes like love, loyalty, relationships and sense of worthiness, all showcased with dollops of subtle  humor and wit, making it more enjoyable even as it keeps the grey cells working. Does humanity count or does lineage? How long can one keep a secret? These and many more questions keep piling up and answered as the story moves on.

The non linear screenplay takes some getting used to but the visuals make up for it. The performance of Sathyadev is  simply incredible and something to be experienced via the  screen. He seems to have lived his complex role covering differentv stages to his life.  Even Tim the last scene he never ceases to entertain us. Deepa Thomas is perfectly cast in a role which she shines in while Vikas plays every stage of life superbly, bringing a touch of realism to the fantastical proceedings on screen.

Watch for the twists, and especially the climax. A cinematic experience optimised by the big screen and a,stellar cast, great music and rich  visuals.

Rating 3/5
