Movie Review: Mayan
The story, a thriller based on history and mythology, with elements of fantasy linking them all, Mayan is about the story of a timid Aadhi ( Vinod mohan), a corporate exec who lives an ordinary life.
One day , after a fight, he meditates to calm himself down. Suddenly he gets a relevation and extrordinary spiritual and physical powers and comes to know that the world is going to end in 13 days. Thereon he is supposed to live life to to fullest.
So he starts doing all the things he always wanted to. He marries his boss (Naren)' s daughter Kopuramdevi ( Bindu Madhavi) after leaving his egotistical boss' job, and buys a house for his mother ( Sriranjini).
One day, he meets a cop ( John Vijay) who gives him the task of exterminating some baddies in town which he undertakes.
The story at its core sets up the belief that the ancient Mayan civilisation in South America, actually has its root in Kumarigandam aka Lemuria, making them ancient Tamils.
What happens when he meets the goons he is to exterminate? How is the present of Aadhi linked to the past and the Mayans? What, happens to Aadhi?
The film has several interesting conceptsby director Rajes Kanna which he tries to present using animation graphics as well as real actors. While this is intetesting, it gets a bit repetitive after a while.
The story of Aadhi is well presented and newbie Vinod Mohan looks the part and plays his role with conviction and sincerity. Bindu Madhavi, a fine performer, seems undersutilised while Naren is shown in his usual angry self as in most of his movies. Sriranjini as the mom lights up the screen with her presence.
The screenplay, being non -linear may get a bit confusing to catch up with. While the novel concept and presentation of a mythological fantasy is different from the usual, the making could have been better handled to make a more engaging thriller.
