Movie Review : Am ..Aa

Am ..Aa is a tale of love, highlighting how human bonds transcend  relationdhips of blood and birth and are forged by the heart. The story begins with a lady ( Meera Vasudev) who is yearning for a child after many unsuccessful attempts in her marriage.

The story then shifts to a remote mountain village, where a stranger appears, apparantly as supervisor to  lay a road to a mountain top. There he finds an older woman (Devadarshini) living with a small child who cannot speak. She is extremely protective of the child and the stranger starts to poke around to find out details of her background.

Who is this lady? Who is this stranger and why is he interested in her and the child? What hidden secrets are to be unravelled?

The director builds up the suspense slowly, even as he takes us through the lives of the mountain folk and the mysterious lady. The camerawork is just superb as it caotures the breathtaking, remote mountains and jungles and highlights the tough lives of the village folk.

Devadarshini plays the motherly character to perfection, showcasing the turmoil, fear and love of a protective mother. A very different role in her Malayalam debut, she pulls off the completely de-glam look, and gets into the skin of the character without any melodrama, in a simple yet impactful way.

All the supporting cast are well chosen and the screenplay keeps the momentum of suspense going till the very end,  even as the story takes us into an emotional journey. The sound bgm, locales and production values add to the cinematic experience.

A superbly narrated emotional drama with an impactful message.
