Movie Review :Kenatha Kaanom
Manivasagam ( Yogi Babu) is the village priest in the temple and lives with his grandfather. He is in love with a girl Yazhini ( Lovelyn Chandrasekar) but her father is against the wedding since his village has no water and women have to bring it from a long distance.
But one day, the water diviner predicts there is water in the very land that Manivasagam lives in. He agrees to let a well new dug there and now even his marriage gets fixed.
But the village is in for a shock. For, instead of c water, they discover dinosaur fossils. Soon, the government orders further digging in different parts of the village. The villagers fear that soon they will be forced to leave their village. To add to their woes, another shock also awaits them.
What do they do next? How do they get out of this mess?
The film is a comedy drama with an intriguing plot. It grabs attention and one stays hooked till the end.
The film is helmed by Yogi Babu's noteworthy act. It's good to see him in a full fledged, meaty role and he does full justice to it. Witty liners apart, he handles emotions and even romance deftly. Lovelyn Chandrasekhar as the feisty girl determined to marry him, does a fantastic job with an impactful performance. Her lines to her father, alluding to women's education and ability to fend for themselves and their partner leave a mark.
Raichal Rebecca gets a significant role and delivers her part with conviction, her quiet but firm dialogue delivery being an asset.
The supporting cast is superb and its their joint effort and performances, with innocent, quirky observations, comments and wit, that makes this comedy drama a pleasure to watch. The reference to an entire village coming together for each other, the significance of knowledge and values of the aged in our society, are all brought out superbly.
There are scenes which make you feel sorry for them as well. But the overall underlying messages come through in the director's unobtrusive, many times disguised in humor, never in- your-face style. He raises several questions (like for instance, the debate on the need and role of archeology in modern life versus the immediate public needs), which are interesting.
However, the climax portions seem rushed compared to the rest of the movie and raise a few logical questions which seem unexplained. The satire seems aimed at belief systems of people.
Overall, the film stands firmly on Yogi Babu's able shoulders and aided by a solid cast and and an interesting story and setting that resonates with audiences and good visuals, this rural comedy drama is worth a watch.
