Movie Review: Double Occupancy
A young couple ( Vinodhini ,Bose Venkat) havea baby, whom they name Rajini (who by a quirk of fate, transforms from male to female at different times of the day. One day the parents die in an accident and the male Rajini (Santhosh) starts hating his female version (Reshma Venkat) as she got to do the last rites of the parents.
Cut to the present, where the duo are adults. They switch from male to female at 6 am and 6 pm. Both of them find jobs and each of them also find love ( Vinoth Kishan and Samyuktha Viswanathan) and even a common friend ( in VTV Ganesh).
But due to their constant gender changes, they land into several misunderstandings with thier friends. To add to their woes, a corporate boss wants to exploit their rare gender situation for making money.
In the midst of all these tough situations, do both Rajini's ever find their way to a better life and find love?
The film has an unusual fantasy plot, which keeps you intrigued about what is happening and once you understand the basic plot, you are hooked to finding out how the characters get a grip on their lives.
It is to the credit of the 4 leads and VTV Ganesh, who keep you engaged and invested in the story, with their credible and noteworthy performances. Santhosh does a terrific job as Rajini and shines with not just his good looks and physique but equally in the emotional and action sequences. Reshma gets into the skin of her character wonderfully and makes her real for the viewer. Together the duo have done a commendable job of a tough role.
Samyuktha Visvanathan is graceful, poisded and stately, fitting her role perfectly and has a good screen presence, doing full justice to her role. It's good to see Vinoth Kishan as a scientist, in a more jolly avatar, without beimg typecast in a serious role and he shines in his role.
VTV Ganesh adds to the proceedings with his witticisms and his presence livens things up even more.
The music by Sam C S has peppy as well as melodious tracks. The visuals by DOP Santhakumar along with trendy set design all add to the viewing experience.
There are the usual action sequences and the right mix of romance, emotions, conflict and confusion to keep the viewer invested.
However, at places the situations turn repetitive as do some of the dialogues. The corporate angle with Bucks could have been better handled.
Watch out for the ending.
Overall, Double Occupancy makes for a fun fantasy film with an unusual plot, racy narration, solid performances that lend credibility to characters, trendy making and the right mix of emotions and comedy.
