Movie Review: Jolly O Gymkhana
Director Shakthi Chidambaram returns with a comedy with a large ensemble cast with Prabhu Deva, Abhirami, Yogi Babu, Madonna Sebastien, Chaams, Robot Shankar, YG Mahendran and more.
The story revolves around a mother Chellamma (Abhirami) who runs a catering business with her 3 daughters and her father ( YG Mahendra). But in an alteraction with a local politico , the grandfather lands up in hospital and the family finds that they have have to arrange for 25 lakhs for his hospital care.
As they try to arrange money somehow, they land up with a dead body of a lawyer Pookundran ( Prabhu Deva) instead. From then on their problems keep on increasing. Not only cops but even goons are trying to find the lawyer. The ladies have not only a corpse on their hands but a lot more to contend with.
What happens next?
The film has Prabhu Deva playing a corpse , only performing live in the flashback scenes. While Madonna, Abhirami, Poojitha and others have done a good job, the humor quotient added on by Yogu Babu as a church father, Robot Shankar and MS Bhaskar with one their liners brings in the laughs.
However, many comedy scenes seem forced and dated while several others seem farcical and loud, perhaps aimed at lovers of that genre of comedy. The
long drawn plot gets a tad tedious to watch after a while. The constant chases and loud bgm test one's patience.
The making is grand, the visuals are great, especially the hill station scenes, the large ensemble cast is aptly chosen and production design is on point. Watch out also for an unusual climax fight.
A comedy aimed at family audiences, Jolly O Gynkhama aims to tickle the funny bone alright, but seems to succeed only in parts.
