Movie Review : Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra

Produced by Dulquer Salman's Wayfarer Films, Lokah Chapter 1 revolves around a young girl, Chandra ( Kalyani Priyadarshan) who comes to live opposite a group of young men , one of them ( Naslen) who becomes her friend.

But soon the boys discover that Chandra is not what she seems, but instead, has some superpowers. Even as they absorb this truth, more surprises await them,  as they are drawn into Chandra's world, thanks to a series of incidents, which put all them into life-threatening danger.

Who is Chandra actually? What are her super powers? What is her mission? Who is helping her? Do the friends and Chandra survive the onslaught that overwhelms them?

A Malyalam film, touted to be their  first lady superhero movie,  Lokah skillfully links age -old folklore and modern day tales of super human heroes and makes a fine blend of thrilling, mysterious, suspensful and action driven moments, with twists, emotions and chills galore, all brought together with a well-paced screenplay. Various characters enter the fray, especially in the second half, pumping up the suspense.

The camera, art and music departments deserve mention as do the action and vfx teams, for taking the viewer into a different world, quite convincingly. Technically a sound film indeed.

Kalyani Priyadarshan stands out,  with a measured performance, bringing a quiet gravitas to her role, while at the same time adding to the chill factor with some of her moves.  Her body language, expressions and physique further aid in pulling off her role convincingly.

Sandy Master pulls off  a very convincing,   chilling performance as the meanacing cop.

Watch out for the suspenseful and chilling period setting jungle scenes with some superb performances.

On the flip side, the film may seem a tad slow in some parts  and some portions of the story require greater attention to be grasped clearly. There is also bloodletting and gore, not for the faint-hearted.

Watch out for special cameos and  twists in the climax and wait till after the end credits roll for more revelations.

Rating 4/5
