Movie Review: Kaayal

AdiTamizh ( Lingesh) an orphan, and Thenmozhi ( Gayathrie) are in love. While her father supports them, her mother is against the alliance due to ingrained caste based prejudices.

But a sudden tragedy strikes which throws this family's lives upside-down. Thenmozhi commits suicide.

This has disastrous results for not only her family but also the life of Adi Tamizh who is deeply impacted.

Why did Thenmozhi commit suicide? How do these people cope with their lives?  Does her mother ever get over her caste bias?

The film follows a non -linear narration that makes for interesting viewing. The visuals comprise of aesthetically captured locations which adds  to the feel and impact of the film.

Gayathrie not only looks beautiful but has also played her role with just the right moderation, giving it a realistic feel. The parents who have a crucial role in the story have done a good job,  with their subtle expressions and body language conveying deeper meaning. Special mention must be made of Anumol as the mother,  who portrays the layers of her character to perfection.

Ramesh Thilak's adds value with his presence.

The director ensures he conveys more with the  expressions of his actors,  than just giving them the usual lenghty dialogues, which works well for the film.

The non -linear narration may make things confusing but adds to the suspense and slow unfolding of the story and state of mind of the characters.

There are times when the film is slow and the scenes with Adi's  new colleague trying to be his girlfriend, are a tad tiresome to watch in the way the girl has been  portrayed.

But the film's attempts to examine  social prejudices and the subsequent consequences on individual lives, seems well meaning and when brought out with subtlety and sans melodrama, is refreshing.
