Movie Review : Paruthi
Siva, a young orphan schoolboy living with his grandmother is friends with his classmate Madhi, girl from a well to do family. Their teenage affection is opposed strongly by Madhi's grandmother who is a staunch casteist. But the kids continue to be friends.
A parallel story is about a pair of lovers. The father of the upper caste boy is a vengeful , ruthless man who poisons his own son and wreaks havoc on his lover, so that the duo never marry.
One day, Siva discovers that his mother whom he yearns for, is actually alive and is none other than Kaniamma ( Sonia Agarwal) a woman ostracised by society, who lives a tough life working in harsh conditions as village labourer.
What is her story? Why did she abandon her son and take to this life? Does Siva unite with his mother?
The film seeks to highlight the social evil if untouchability and the casteist conditioning of society which forces innocents into tragic circumstances.
The scenes between Siva and his granny are touching and similarly the innocent relationship between Siva and Madhi is well brought out. The actors have done a superb job.
Sonia Agarwal, brings a gravitas with her presence delivering a solid act as the mother caught in terrible circumstances, forced to abandon her child.
Through different characters and curcumstances, the film highlights both the good and bad elements in society and brings intuitive sharp focus the evils of social discrimination.
The songs are melodious, the bgm effective.
However many of the scenes are long drawn out and could have done with crisper editing. Many scenes give a feeling of an eighties film, high in melodrama, with a slow narration, with sentimental songs thrown into the equation.
An interesting concept which could have done with better writing, screenplay and editing.
