Movie Review:Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai

Nivin Pauly plays a man who had lived for 8000 years. He meets a man ( Soori) on a train, who has returned from abroad. To him he narrates his journey over time, meeting a young girl he fell in love with ( Anjali) several times,in various births  over centuries. His talks, reveal the stark differences between the duo.

While Soori plays a man whose aim is, to look after himself and his family's needs, Nivin on the other hand is a man who values humanity and love for all species equally, rising above the materialistic and gross nature of the world.
What happens when these two worlds collide in the train ride?

Though the film is,filled with sublime and positive messages, it is all conveyed in a dull dialogue heavy manner, filled with abstract allusionz and puzzling, fantasy- filled narrations which seem to touch upon various topics like love, hope, humanity, ways of life etc. The train journey which has long dialogues intetspersed by sudden action, the story of a rat and mostly Soori caught in a tough situation, all test one's patience after a while.

Soori does his best, fitting into the role alotted to him, but looks as puzzled and cluless as the audience. It is certainly not amongst his best acts.

Anjali looks ethereal in all the get -ups and versions she is shown in and gets some good dialogues as well. But the actor seems mostly wasted in these appearances on an off.

Nivin Pauly is the lead and does his utmost but is let down by an abstract script and an elusive  storyline that one has to search for. The long, slow, profound dialogues are tedious to watch after a while.

Characters come and go at random, scenes and scenarios change as the search for something by the hero, continues.

The film is dotted with songs which lighten the sombre and abstract mood from time to time. The visuals are good in places in the second half.

But the train scenes seem extended, testing ones's patiece.

Overall, a movie spouting several messages, conveyed in an abstract, docu- drama style, that plods on, aided by some good visuals from time to time.
