Movie review: Friday

Image
Friday is the story revolving a set of gang rivalry, cops and how the innocent get involved in circumstances beyond their control, leading to a chain reaction of violence.  A young man is injured in the cross fire of a gang War. But before you know it,  he turns against the very man who saved his life and protected him.  Why has he turned against his protector? What is the backstory of these people which has led to this situation? The film has an intetesting premise about violence breeding more violence leading to war across generations. But the manner in which the screenplay runs makes things appear a rad repetitive. There are many characters running around, with various names and one doesn't get a real chance to connect to most, except a few which Mahesh for tedious viewing. The screenplay though fast-paced, needed in- depth writing  to establish a connect.  The main leads have done a fine job,  with convincing performances. The making is mostly in ...

Movie review : Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga

Image
A senior cop Magudapathy ( Arjun Sarja )  gets involved in the death of a middle aged man, a case, whose clues  lead him to another death- that of  girl child, found dead in an apartment block.  Upon investigation he meets Meera ( Aishwarya Rajesh ) who was the teacher of that special child and her mother Geetha ( Abhirami Venkatachalam ) and Aadhi ( Praveen Raj) who is Meera's boyfriend and lived in the same building as the murder. As the investigation deepens, more deaths occur, and clues emerge which point in a certain direction. Who is the killer? And why was the child killed? Does Magudapathy get to the truth in time? The film highlights well the vulnerabilities of kids and how adults fail many a time in their responsibilities towards their safety. How even Meera, a trained professional, overlooks the signs of distress the child gives out,   is an eye opener and the film deserves kudos for highlighting such an issue, that both caregivers and parents ne...

Movie Review : Mask

Image
Velu ( Kavin) solves issues for people in trouble, but for a fat price. During his dealings, he runs up against an activist with nefarious activities, Bhumi ( Andrea Jeremiah) and he undertakes a job for a missing 440 crore  cash consignment for her. But things become complicated when he understands that he has himself accidentally become a witness to and part of  the heist of the said sum by masked men. What happens subsequently? Whose money is it? Is he able to return it to Bhumi? What are the pitfalls of such a decision? Who are the masked men? The film starts off interestestingly enough, with several engaging scenes and situations between Velu and his clients, betwen Velu and his new girlfriend ( Ruhani Sharma), and also scenes involving the dreaded Bhumi. While the movie is gripping and entertaining, the tension shifts to a different gear in the second half with new characters  emerging. While the film has a crisp run time, some scenes feel leghthy and repetitive. Ho...

Movie Review : Sisu The Road to Revenge

Image
Sisu (2022), written and helmed by Jalamari Helander,  was set in a period towards the close of World War 2, when  the Lapland War was fought between Finland and Nazi Germany.  The story  was centred around a retired Finnish Army Commando  who was  on a gold expedition. A corrupt officer wanted him dead but the Commando was a stubborn man who simply refused to die. In  the  2025  sequel by the same director, Aatami Korpi ( Jorma Tommila), the ex-commando whose family was already murdered, tries to shift his family house and re-erect it elsewhere. But Igor Draganov (Stephen Lang), the Soviet Officer who had killed Aatami’s family, gets to know about Aatami’s arrival and vows to kill the former Commando. Another battle begins.  Sisu The Revenge is every bit as gripping as the original, if not more.  There are mindblowing action blocks on the roads, air raids, underwater scenes  and a spellbinding series of action  blo...

Movie Review : Iravin Vizhigal

Image
A strange masked man is killing people on a remote jungle, quite mercilessly. On anther side of town a young girl ( Neema Ray) and her partner are disturbing people with their candid prank videos and mercilessly making fun of their discomfort and pain, all for profit. One day,  the duo find themselves accosted and tortured by the masked man.  What happens to them? Who is the killer and why is he doing this? The story has  a topical message for society riddled with a phone obsession and highlights the harm this can cause. Neema Ray does a good job of her role as does the masked man.  The screenplay seems to ramble on a tad too much in all directions while building up the premise leading to repetitive and bland scenes  It's the second half of the film which garners interest and establishes an emotional connect.  The action blocks at the climax are grippingly choreographed.  A movie with an important message.

Movie Review: Middle Class

Image

But just when things are going so well,  something happens which puts a break into their path to making it big in life.  What is the problem? How do the couple overcome the odds piling up against them? The film is  delightful and warm tale of middle class life,  told in the most entertaining way.  The pillars are the lead pair who share a fantastic chemistry on screen, delivering realistic and  natural performances, that keep you emotionally connected to their lives and problems. Vijaylakshmi outstanding act is a delight to watch and one hopes she does more...

Movie Review : Yellow

Movie Review : Dawood

Image
Dawood is the story of a bunch of dangerous dons who are a all scared of the big boss- Dawood. But nobody has really seen the man. However, both the police and the various dons indulging in nefarious activities,  highly revere him and are scared by his prowess. A young, innocent taxi driver ( Lingaa) , quote by chance, gets involved with a gang. When things get rough,  he has only his friend ( Sha Ra ) to turn to.   Who is this taxi driver? Is he really the innocent person they believe him to be? What happens to him? The film is touted to be a suspense filled drama and to to this the director has largely succeeded as the suspense is maintained till the end. But too much of suspense, with long winded dialogues and no real answers about dawood, turn repetitive after a while. The first half is spent this way, establishing the story. But not much progress takes place in the second half as well. And the climax only raises more questions which looks like a leas for ...
