Film Review: Theera Kadhal

The triangular love story, Theera Kadhal, directed by Rohin Venkatesan , produced by Lyca Productiobs, hit screens today on May 26th.

Gautham ( Jai ) and Vandana ( Sshivada) are an IT couple with a kid ( Vriddhi Vishal) who live in Chennai. When Gautham goes on a work trip to Mangalore, in the train ride, he bumps into Aranya ( Aishwarya Rajesh), his college mate and ex lover, who had ditched him last minute due to family considerations, when they had planned to elope.

As the duo are both on work in Mangalore for 2 weeks, sparks fly and the close friendship is rekindled by Gautham's efforts to meet her. Aranya has an abusive husband ( Amzath Khan) which saddens Gautham. But at the end of the trip,  the duo agree not to meet in Chennai as both are married.

But things begin to head south when Aranya decides to divorce her violent husband and turns to Gautham for solace, disrupting his married life, by stalking him and even turning up at his doorstep as a new neighbour when he shuns her.

Torn between love for his family and the  shared old bond with his ex -lover who wants to marry him, Gautham feels both guilty and trapped.

What happens next? Does his wife find out? Does Aranya push him further to leave his wife? Does he get a resolution to this quandary he finds himself in?

The film works well due to a variety of reasons. The cast is aptly chosen and all the leads have given  superb performances to make the goings- on and twists, look credible. Jai conveys the right mix of romance, emotions and humor as lover, husband and doting dad. Aishwarya looks fantastic all through and carries the film on her shoulders with a layered  and nuanced performance, unraveling the turmoil within her. Sshivada looks regal and effective as the young professional, mom and wife end delivers a good performance. Baby Vriddhi never over does it and delivers a cute act. Amzath too does a fine job as does Abdool Lee at Arun, Gautham's buddy.

The 2 songs are well picturised and all the locations  make for good visuals in keeping with the  story and milieu of its characters.

The  issues of love, romance, longing, marriage, relationships and the meaning of family  are some of the topics dealt with, in a light- hearted yet effective manner.

With  neat performances, crisp dialogues,  humor and emotions, Theera Kaadhal is breezy relationship drama that makes for a good watch.
