Movie Review : Brother

M Rajesh returns with a comedy family drama movie with Brother.

Karthi ( Jayam Ravi) who lives with his parents,  gives up his study as a lawyer midway. For, he has a penchant to speak the truth and take people to task whenever he hears of a wrong doing, and uses his knowledge of the law to threaten them to change their ways.

This habit of his puts his aged parents in stressful situations to the extent that they want him to leave home. Karthi's beloved elder sister (Bhumika Chawla) takes him to Ooty for a few months, to  reform him and thus reduce the tension for her parents as well.

But in Ooty too, Karthi starts causing problems within his sister's family and thus makes many  an enemy there too. Things  get really out of hand when his own sister's marrriage breaks up due to Karthi's words and actions.

Does Karthi change his ways ? Does he save his sister's marriage and mend his ways?

The film has an interesting premise and Jayam Ravi does his bit most convincingly. The bond between the brother and sister is well brought out by both actors.

Priyanka Mohan as Natty's sister shines with her presence. Rao Ramesh is convincing as the adamamt beaurocrat while Saranya Ponvannan is presented in a different avatar than her usual self. Bhumika Chawla makes an impactful comeback with a measured performance. Natty as usual gives an impactful performance.

The Makkamishi viral song by Harris Jayaraj lights up the proceedings but the bgm seems  dated as does the feel of the film,  Though the scenic visuals of Ooty are breathtaking, the film seems to give off an eighties feel with the kind of humor, and staging. Some scenes like the family convetsations on the dinner table remind you of school plays. The scenes with VTV Ganesh dont really generate laughs and the actor could have been better utilused for sure.

The solid cast of  actors have done a fine job, but on the whole Brother, though aiming to be a  fun filled, emotional family entertainer,  could have done with better writing, staging and humor to be more engaging watch.
