Movie Review : Maria

The story of Maria, revolves around a young nun, hailing from a small town. One day after several years in the nunnery, she goes on a break to her cousin Agnes' home. There she meets her cousin and her friend, who are sharing the house with their 2 live-in boyfriends respectively.

During the short visit, Maria, though a pious girl, finds herself drawn to worldly pleasures including physical desires, which she gives in to, much to her regret.

However, overcome by conflict, she finally decides she wants to leave the nunnery and live a worldly life. However  circumstances push her to a satanic cult instead led by Anton Levey.

What leads Maria towards this cult? What changes does she undergo as a result? How does her family react? What happens to her?

The director has attempted to portray the conflict of a young woman  torn between religious vows and worldly desires. In the first half,  he succeeds quite well in showcasing her slow transition.

However, in the second half the movie takes an unexpected turn when the satanic cult aspect is introduced. The director seems to have gotten to great lengths to explain this cult with illustrations and dialogues and it's not clear what the aim of the film is in doing so.  The climax too is ambigious and seems to hint at things and left to the viewers imagination.

Though the actors have all done a splendid job, they needed better dialogues and more depth. The making and frames seek to give a realistic touch to the film, with good bgm, but overall the making doesnt pique interest and seems flat.

The ending being ambigious doesn't help either.
