Movie Review: Red Label
An upright college student Harish is fighting college elections opposite Pandian, a goon who is the son of powerful politico ( RV Udhayakumar). To help him win, he enlists the help of a former student union leader, Kathir ( Lenin) who makes things difficult for Pandian to win.
But Kathir has a history frim his college days and a local corrupt cop is waiting for Kathir to make mistakes so that he can put him in jail.
When Kathir helps Harish win the elections, it angers Pandian, who also happens to be the brother of Kathir's lady love Pavi ( Anu Mohan).
Once elections are over, the lovers decide to elope, when Pavi 's father gets her engaged to another rich goon, Karmegham.
But in doing so, in a chase fight between Kathir and Karmegham, a tragedy happens.
What happens next?
The story is set mostly on a college campus and follows a non-linear narration taking the viewer to characters and events in the past which have a connection to the present.
On the face of it, the story moves from collegs elections to thugs using muscle power to do what they want, to marriage issues and a power struggle between a politico and his daughter to a cop and hero tussle and ends up as a thriller.
The second half shifts into a murder and thriller mode which is more interesting than the mundane first half, leading to a surprise climax.
The film takes time to set up is characters in the first half, which makes thing sluggish for a bit. However, the latter portions more than make up for it.
The making is good, with adequate bgm and visually good songs.
The actors have done a fine job and the lead pair share a good chemistry and camaraderie which works well for the film. Lenin is solid and credibly looks the part of the dependable young man who stands for certain values. His performance is confident and dignified.
AnunMohan is the perfect foil as the chirpy girl who falls for his values, far removed from those of her wicked father and goon brother ( who had acted very well in fact)
Though the themes handled maybe a tad dated and some supporting cast do give a wooden performance at times, overall the film, with a newbie team, manages to make for a timepass watch.
