Movie Review : Kaakee Circus ( webseries)

Kaakee Circus, revolves around a bunch of cops in  housing prisoners in a jail, where a hundi, dedicated for charity money collected for a deity, is suddenly found stolen, despite being protected by a grillled cage and a lock, that too right under the presence is so many cops.

When one of the cops ( Subash Selvam) tries to follow up some clues leading  to a suspect, he is deterred in his efforts by his superior (Munishkanth), who firmly believes in goodness of people and  that prisoners can change if they have exposure to reading good books ( namely those written by himself, all housed in the prison library).

Do the cops manage to catch the thief?

The web series has a solid cast which works in its favour. Right from Subash Selvam's sincere performance to Munishkanth's upright stance and innocent belief in human nature, to Rajesh Madhavan's villanous smirks and superb act, which actually gives you the creeps ( he is that good!), àlong with Vinsu Rachel Sam's refreshing performance, the series has a solid cast of supporting actors as well, like the vloggers and the coffin seller as well.

Thw series sets  the mood right at the start as it takes you into the world of its characters and though it takes time to warm up to the· plot, once it does so,  the story picks up pace.

But the screenplay does lag in the dust free episodes with repetitive scenes with criminals and the cops, mostly on the topic off reading books.

The plot is unusual but it takes time to get to the invrstigative part

The humor doesn't always land. In fact its only the last few eisodes, when Subash Selvam warms up to solving the case and shows a deepee side of his character , with the sunsequent outburst against his senior, that the story gets really engaging.

The way Munishkanth's character is written lacks depth and the so called humorous scenes get tedious to watch.

Another area which needs attention is the dialogue, where the villain speaks crucial dialogues to his accomplice in Malayalam, which may  not be understood by viewers watching in Tamil. The subtitles in Tamil move so fast that one ends up not knowing what the duo are talking about.  This way their motives are left unknown.

The series is touted to be a comedy, but works mostly in the investigative portions.
A bit of editing of few sequences would have made for better viewing.

Overall, Kaakee Circus with its unusual storyline, makes for a good time pass watch. Streaming on Zee 5 Tamil.

Rating 3/5
