Movie Review : Immortal
Magi ( GV Prakash) works at the printing press of his uncle in Chennai. One day, he is forced to find new lodgings but try as he might be is unsuccessful. Just when he is at his tether's end, a rare offer falls into his lap. A beautiful younf woman Sindhu ( Kayadu Lohar) offers him a room in her luxury apartment in a condominium, for a piddling amount.
Magi is overjoyed at this opprtunity to live in luxury and that too in the company of the beautiful Sindhu.
But soon a series of puzzling, eerie circumstances give him the realisation that Sindhu is not who she seems to be. Unable to get out, Magi finds himself trapped in the apartment.
Who is Sindhu in reality? What is the terrible discovery Magi makes? Does he ever escape to safety?
The film is a well - mounted, quality production. The classy apartment setting, with props and decor that subtly highlight the secrets Sindhu hides. The luxurious space is almost like a character in the film and works in its favor.
The suspense and slow build-up is terrific, with a fantastic and chilling climsx portion with good quality vfx, which adds to the film. The begginning portions too are fantastically conceived and shot in the jungle.
The music by Sam CS is another solid pillar in the film, elevating the key portions and adding to the atmosphere of the film. Good sound design ensures the sound is never jarring.
The visuals are aesthetic captured, the fantasy portions blending in adequately with the vfx. The costumes especially of Kayadu add to her youthful persona in the film.
The edit department too deserves kudos. The film is laced with humor, thanks Aaditya Kathir and Lollu Sabha Maaran who keep the mood light but also play significant roles in the story.
For GV Prakash, this is another winner, as he yet again aces his role in an interesting plot. His scenes with buddy Aaditya and uncle Maaran in the first half and later with TM Karthik inside the apartment are enteryaininh. His smouldering chemistry with Kayadu adds to the story. The scenes with Kayadu and KTM Karthik as the plot twists emerge are chillimg and gripping. Gv Prakash aces the initial attraction then fear, desperation and frustration with his expressions.
For Kayadu, this is a meaty role and she aces it effortlessly, keeping the drama and slow build up of chills in a fantastically nuanced performance proving her mettle.
An aesthetically made fantasy horror adventure, with slow-burn suspense, superb performances and a chilling plot with links to the title, Immortal, is a rivetting entertainer.
