Movie Review : Mandaadi
In Mugavai Pattinam, a coastal village famous for sailboat racing, Muthukaali ( Soori)—a once-celebrated sailboat racer—returns after twenty years of self-imposed exile.
He crosses paths with Maari (Mithun Jai Shankar), a rebellious teenager who has been forced to flee the village following a violent incident during a local race.
Muthukaali steps in to protect him, but his return reignites old rivalries and disturbs the village’s existing power structure.
His old friend, and now enemy, Saattaappuli ( Suhas), the powerful controller of the village race team, challenges Muthukaali to a high-stakes sailboat race.
With Maari and a group of inexperienced local youths, Muthukaali forms a team and begins training against overwhelming odds.
Saattaappuli uses his wealth, influence, and violent threat laden control over the villagers to crush their underdog effort.
On race day, several boats battle fierce winds and roaring tides as Muthukaali’s team challenges Saattaappuli’s dominance.
The race becomes a powerful battle for redemption, justice, lost honour, and the future of the village. Does Muthukaali win and restore his honour and quell the enemy?
The director Mathimaran Pugazhendi has wonderfully recreated the world of Muthukaali and Saattapuli, their lives in her hamlet, dominated by the sailboat races, their strong bond as youths and later their enemity.
Each actor in the large ensemble cast is superbly chosen to play the various characters, each of them memorable even in small roles.
The visuals by SR Kathir are terrific all the more so in the sailboat race scenes mid sea, making you wonder in awe how the team pulled off many of the shots.
The production design of KRK Kiran deserves kudos, creating the village scenes and the ethos that makes eveything look authentic with a realistic touch
GV Prakash's thrilling bgm raises the tension and build -up in the boat race scenes, elevating every scene with a pulsating suspense.
The editing is sharp with no extra flab nor lingering with extended emotions or dialogues. The film maintains a racy feel, yet stands strong in moments of emotional outbursts which are plenty.
The mainstay of the film is undoubtedly the strong performances of the leads, namely Soori, Suhas and Mahima Nambiar.
Soori rules the film right from the word go, his fiery eyes and determined expression lighting up the screen even when there is no dialogue. He excels in the action scenes wonderfully choreographed by the team of Peter Hein, Dhilip Subbarayan, Mahesh Mathew - each stunt a highlight of the film, keeping you glued. In the scenes with Mahima Nambiar, both as a youth and later in life, Soori brings a gravitas to his performance. From comedian to lead actor and now action hero, Soori's growth arc as a consummate actor, performer is tremendous and the way he grabs your attention with his larger than life screen presence is fantastic, no doubt fruit of hardwork, as is evident in his physique that adds credibility to the role of sailboat racer and ability to carry tough stunts all with utter conviction.
Suhas delivers a stupendous performance, as the fiery, scheming and vengeful villager, who would go to any lengths to achieve his goal. The face off scenes with Soori are full of high drama, grit and rawness, adding to the tension of the screenplay. A hi-voltage performer, it would seem that Suhas is going to be flooded with roles in Kollywood.
Mahima Nambiar delivers a magnificent act in the second half in a nuanced role of Angel, Muthukaali's lover who married Maari's father. She aces especially, the emotional scenes with Soori, adding to the drama in the film.
Sathyaraj as the mentor and teacher is aptly cast.
The film brings to the screen the world of sailboat racing with a great deal of autheticity, rooted in realism, making the viewer almost breathe the sea air, in the way the scenes are filmed and presented on screen. The powerful message about how the sport is also an important life skill and intrinsic part of the fabric of life of the people in the area is beautifully brought out in the grippimg,nsil-biting climax
On the flip side, the film can feel repetitive at places and though the races are praisworthy, its, tough to keep track of each team in long distance shorts. The grusome violence is off putting in places as is the constant need for revenge and death threats by Saattapuli and his family.
Overall however, Mandaadi is an outstanding rural sports action drama, with noteworthy performances and hi-octane action blocks, in the backdrop of sail boat racing, a rarity on screen. To top it all at the core is Soori's sincere and intense powerhouse performance, which keeps you rivetted to the screen.
